Kona Ecosystem

Celebrated around the world for its idyllic climate, pristine beaches, radiant rainbows, and dramatic sunsets, Kailua-Kona is the very essence of paradise. Yet beyond these iconic vistas lies a deeper wonder: the island’s extraordinary ecological richness.

Hawai‘i’s environment is so distinct that it’s recognized as a completely separate ecoregion—an ecological gem on the global stage. From rare marine life and native plants to ancient lava flows and sacred landscapes, Kona invites you to explore its hidden depths.

Kona is more than just a destination—it’s a living, breathing ecosystem and a cultural treasure. As a visitor, your choices matter. By traveling mindfully, you help preserve this unique place for generations to come.

Together, we can help keep Hawai‘i healthy and thriving for today’s visitors and tomorrow’s generations.

🌺 Protect the Ocean and Coral Reefs

  • Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen: Many sunscreens contain chemicals harmful to coral reefs. Please choose reef-safe or mineral-based sunscreen to protect marine life and preserve the ocean’s health.
  • Avoid Touching Coral and Marine Life: Coral is a living organism and easily damaged. Look, but don’t touch—the same goes for turtles, dolphins, and fish.
  • Do Not Remove Sand, Rocks, or Shells: These are protected natural resources. Taking them is not only harmful, but also considered bad luck in Hawaiian culture.

🐢 Respect Native Wildlife

  • Observe From a Distance: Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) and monk seals are federally protected. Please stay at least 10–15 feet away and never attempt to touch or feed them.
  • Never Feed Wildlife: Feeding wild animals disrupts their natural behaviors and can be dangerous for them and for you.

♻️ Reduce Waste & Plastic Use

  • Pack Reusables: Bring your own water bottles, shopping bags, and utensils to help reduce single-use plastic waste.
  • Dispose Responsibly: Use recycling and waste bins properly. Let’s all do our part to keep trails, beaches, and parks clean.

🌿 Stay on Trails and Respect Sacred Sites

  • Stick to Marked Paths: Hiking off-trail can damage native plants and fragile ecosystems. Stay on designated trails to minimize your impact.
  • Honor Cultural Sites: Many locations in Hawai‘i are sacred and culturally significant. Please follow all posted signs and guidelines.
